Tips for Managing Psoriasis Flare-ups

Suffering from a psoriasis flare-up? The team at Aesthetic Dermatology in Media & Paoli, PA, shares some tips to help you find relief below.

5 Tips for Psoriasis Flare-Ups

Psoriasis is one of many skin disorders that leave sufferers feeling irritated and distressed. It occurs when inflammation is present and new skin cells grow faster than the old ones shed, leaving scaly patches of skin. Various triggers can cause a flare-up. Below are some of the most effective tips for dealing with such flare-ups shared by the team at Aesthetic Dermatology in Media & Paoli, PA.

1. Do Not Scratch

It can be so tempting to scratch your skin during a flare-up, but this can produce undesired consequences. Scratching damages the skin, which can trigger inflammation and an even worse flare-up. Instead of scratching, keep anti-itch cream on hand for relief.

2. Calm Yourself

Stress is one of the most common triggers for psoriasis flare-ups, so it’s important to try to keep yourself calm and relaxed. Yoga can be very helpful in this area, but nearly anything will work. You might try to write out your thoughts and feelings, listen to music, meditate, enjoy a hobby, or any other activity that helps you relax.

3. Cleanse and Moisturize

Taking a bath or shower can be beneficial, but aim for lukewarm water instead of hot water. Additionally, try to keep it to a 10-minute limit. When you’re finished, gently pat your skin but do not rub it. Add fragrance-free moisturizers, such as coconut oil or body creams, to help lock in the moisture from the shower. Some people enjoy keeping their moisturizers in the refrigerator so that they’ll be cool when applied to their irritated skin.

4. Try a Wet Wrap

After applying your medication, wrap a wet, warm washcloth around the treated area for about half an hour. This can help the medication soak into the skin even better for more effective relief.

5. Visit Your Dermatologist

One of your best resources when you have a flare-up is your dermatologist. While your condition might just seem an annoyance, it’s important to remember that it’s occurring due to an overreaction in the immune system. If not cared for properly, the inflammation can spread throughout the body and lead to health complications, such as psoriatic arthritis. However, your dermatologist can help reduce inflammation, its potential to spread, and your discomfort.
